Program Description Duke University's North Carolina LiteracyCorps (NCLC) is a statewide consortium of AmeriCorps members working to provide direct service and build the capacity and impact of community and campus-based literacy programs. Our partnership organizations represent the diversity of NC learners including pre-k, K-12, out of school youth, and adult learners. The NCLC focuses on social justice through education opportunity while critically examining the root causes of education inequities. Members receive training and participate in a community of practice designed to meet individual and cohort learning goals. The North Carolina LiteracyCorps is housed in Duke Service-Learning at Duke University. Service will be primarily off-campus at participating community nonprofits and schools and could be in-person or virtual depending on location. LiteracyCorps members are neither employees nor volunteers; they are members of a National Service Program. Half-time LiteracyCorps members will receive a living allowance of $16,000 for 11 months of service and upon satisfactory completion of 900hours, a Segal Education Award of $3,447.50. The living allowance is not considered salary and is not calculated on an hourly basis. Responsibilities (85%) Members enhance the work of Partners for Success, the service-learning program in Duke's Program in Education. The member will collaborate with staff, students, and community partners to enhance the volunteer management components of the program. This includes volunteer training, scheduling, reflections, and partner visits. schools by offering capacity-building assistance and/or direct teaching and tutoring that is community-driven. The member will assist with program evaluation and develop systems to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Partners for Success Program. (15%) Members are also required to participate in the NC LiteracyCorps programming including: Attend all required AmeriCorps trainings including orientation, CERT, Mental Health First Aid Training, and all Community of Practice meetings. Participate in technical assistance activities such as weekly check-ins, conference calls, and site visits. Assist in disaster preparedness activities and response as needed. Participate in National Identity Days such as: The National Day of Kindness on September 11, Make A Difference Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and National Volunteer Week. Qualifications Bachelor's degree Strong interest in supporting nonprofit organizations focused on education as a social justice tool Valid driver's license Criminal background check Eligibility or authorization to work in the United States Eligibility for hire as an exempt employee of Duke University Flexibility to adapt to both site-based or remote working environments A commitment to service the entire program year which ends August 31, 2024. Essential Functions Adhere to a consistent service schedule and demonstrate reliability and seriousness of purpose. Complete paperwork on time. Communicate effectively with everyone involved in the project - community members, college staff and volunteers, AmeriCorps Program director, service recipients. Demonstrate an ability to understand and implement project service plans, program policies, regulations, objectives, and activities.
