Job title: ST Peer Writing Tutor - Douglas Company: Cochise College Job description : Position Summary: The Student - Peer Writing Tutor works with students individually, in groups, or through the online lab to help them understand and apply course concepts. They encourage students to become independent learners by promoting study and learning strategies aimed at academic progress. Peer writing tutors function as academic role models who support students as they adapt to the demands of college life. They foster a sense of community among students at Cochise College and work cooperatively with other staff members to provide educational activities. Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Duties and Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities: Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position: Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions, group sessions, and workshops either online or face to face Offers critical feedback on writing assignments Answers grammar, usage, punctuation, and reading questions as well as questions on MLA Offers students writing strategies for essays and research papers Helps student develop a variety of study strategies Helps students clarify assignments and other material Participates in workshops and orientations Attends training sessions held for student staff Collaborates with tutoring center staff Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor General Expectations: Employees are expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, employees must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position. Education and Experience; Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education and Experience Requirements: Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summer Possess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher Completion of ENG 101 and 102 with a grade of \"B\" or better Completion of an upper level intensive writing course with a \"B\" or better preferred Students attending Cochise College on an F-1 Visa require full-time enrollment with a minimum of 12 credits per semester and six credits in the summer Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications Knowledge of the proper operation of and the ability to use personal computers and standard office equipment Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and effectively with all types of data Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate actions to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work Environment: Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office, classroom or lab setting with appropriate climate controls. Physical Requirements: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
