Advocacy and Outreach Intern

Support AARP New Mexico’s legislative advocacy and outreach efforts, collaborating with staff and volunteers to advance policies for older adults.

Your Role:

    Key responsibilities include:
  • Working with staff and volunteers to manage special projects, events, and tasks.
  • Engaging directly with volunteers and staff to represent AARP at local events, meetings, public hearings, news conferences, and community events spotlighting AARP issues.
  • Building volunteer teams and identifying local projects aligned with AARP NM priorities to improve the lives of New Mexico’s 50+ and their families.
  • Supporting staff and volunteers to strengthen volunteer teams and advance AARP’s presence in targeted communities.
  • Applying strategic, analytical, and creative thinking to promote policy issues and social mission programming.
  • Researching policy issues, drafting documents to support advocacy efforts, participating in team meetings and strategy discussions, collaborating on communications tactics, and supporting various remote and in-person events.
  • Writing and creating communications for members, the media, and the public.
  • Collaborating with state office staff and internal AARP partners to inform approaches to community work and volunteer initiatives.

About You:

    Candidates should meet the following qualifications:
  • Reside in the Santa Fe or Albuquerque area.
  • Be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university as a rising undergraduate junior or senior, graduate student, or post-doctoral student, and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, or have previously graduated and be enrolled in a continuing education program.
  • Be a self-starter and adaptable, able to work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Zoom technology.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with creating and editing videos and knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus.
  • Regular and reliable job attendance.
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships.
  • Exercise independent judgment in evaluating options to make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in an office/open office environment with moderate noise.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position.
    Compensation & Benefits:
  • Hourly compensation: $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates.
  • Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
  • Hybrid work environment: Mondays and Fridays are remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work must be performed within the United States and its territories.
