Development Director

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-07-27

The Orion Fund is a small non-profit that provides grants to California college students in health crisis. Over the past 20 years, The Orion Fund has become a resource at 70+ college campuses statewide. Grants have paid medical, educational and living expenses to students in medical crisis… from car crashes to cancer, we help students until they can recover.

We are looking for people who, like us, believe that an emergency medical situation should not keep a young person from finishing their studies. We have spent 20 years supporting students who have faced an extraordinary unexpected costs while in college.

This part-time position would be perfect for someone with past fundraising experience who has been away for a bit, misses it, and wants to get back into it in a non-full-time way. And on the other side, it would be perfect for a fundraising professional who wants to slow down and switch to part-time.

Now more than ever, The Orion Fund is committed to providing essential support to students experiencing a health crisis. We strongly believe that no young adult should be derailed from their educational journey due to medical challenges or be left to face these difficult situations without assistance and encouragement.

The challenge. We seek to grow our limited donor base and grow our relationships with current donors. This position is new for The Orion Fund and will focus on direct fundraising with the hope of adding $50,000 to our budget within one year. We feel this number is attainable with someone comfortable in fundraising and with access to our current donors and our email list. We are also grateful to have a stellar reputation within the education community.

This is a part-time, contract position. Although a remote position, we seek a candidate who lives in the San Francisco Bay area, but would consider Southern California. There will be occasional in-person meetings with the board and the ED in the San Francisco Bay area, along with weekly Zoom check-ins.

    Our Development Director will:
  • Grow our relationship-building and fundraising through working with current donors, working with our board, using our email list, social media, and growing our donor support.
  • Meet directly with donors.
  • Excel in building relationships with donors and potential donors.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and our board towards success in all fundraising arenas. Use social media to grow our support network.
    Our Development Director will bring:
  • A love for our mission.
  • Positivity and kindness.
  • The ability to dive in immediately.
  • Successful experiences excelling in fundraising.
  • Successful experiences and comfort in meeting with donors.
  • Impeccable ethics, self-confidence, humility, nonprofit fundraising expertise, great communication skills, the ability to work alone and as part of a team, and creativity in all things fundraising.
  • Knowledge of Constant Contact a plus.
    Minimum qualifications:
  • 5+ years working in nonprofit fundraising.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing direct mail and email fundraising campaigns.
  • Personal work with all levels of donors in relationship building.
    Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience working in human services.
