Position Summary:
The Student Defense Advisor at K Altman Law provides direct support and advocacy for students involved in disciplinary actions, academic integrity violations, Title IX proceedings, and other institutional investigations or sanctions at the K-12 and higher education levels. This role involves client communication, case management, drafting, advocacy in school administrative proceedings (non-legal), and coordination with attorneys when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Advocacy & Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned student clients.
- Guide students through internal school or university processes, including hearings, appeals, and investigative meetings.
- Research K-12 and university policies and applicable federal/state laws.
- Provide emotional and strategic support to clients navigating stressful or high-stakes proceedings.
Case Management
- Manage a caseload of student defense matters (typically 20–25 cases).
- Ensure timely documentation, updates, and progress in each matter.
- Track and manage deadlines for filings, hearings, and communications with educational institutions.
Writing & Documentation
- Draft written responses to disciplinary charges, appeal letters, impact statements, and institutional correspondence.
- Prepare clients for administrative meetings or hearings with talking points, coaching, and relevant documentation.
Collaboration & Legal Coordination
- Coordinate with firm attorneys as appropriate for cases that require legal representation or escalate to litigation.
- Maintain accurate and timely records in Clio and other firm platforms.
- Participate in strategy sessions with legal teams and leadership.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field preferred.
- Prior experience in student advocacy, college advising, school administration, or educational compliance is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Title IX, FERPA, student conduct codes, and institutional disciplinary processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High emotional intelligence and ability to support students in crisis.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Familiarity with law firm operations or administrative proceedings is a plus.
