Job and Responsibilities
We are seeking a part-time, remote Deaf Mentor to provide culturally affirming support and guidance to families of deaf and hard of hearing children from kindergarten through 12th grade. A Deaf Mentor is an adult who is deaf or hard of hearing, fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and provides support, guidance, and role modeling for families of children with hearing loss. This position serves as a bridge between the family and the Deaf community, helping families learn ASL, understand Deaf culture, and navigate the resources available to them throughout their child's K-12 educational journey.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Essential Requirements:
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Deaf or hard of hearing individual, actively involved in the Deaf community
- Serve as a positive role model and cultural guide for families navigating deafness
- Be trained in educational principles and practices for deaf students
- Committed to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices, research, and trends in deaf education
- Able to monitor and assess language development progress according to established standards and developmental stages in partnership with the child's teachers and educational team
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, education, sign language, linguistics, or related human services field
- ASL Teaching certification
- LSL (Listening and Spoken Language) Certification
- Strong communication skills across multiple modalities
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity
- Understanding of K-12 educational systems and deaf education practices
- Knowledge of Deaf community resources and networks
- Ability to provide emotional support and guidance to families

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
