History Research in East Texas
I wanted to see if a historian has an interest in determining if my ancestor’s homestead was taken by the Daniel family through fraud or genuine acquisition. My father passed away recently and sent me the remainder of his genealogy records. From what I can piece together, my heritage is lined up with John Cherry, who was one of Aaron Cherry Sr.’s sons and a Lieutenant for Sam Houston.
I had some old writings that my Dad sent me about a place called Fredonia. I never really put much stock in the stuff since my poor Grandmother, Nettie Smith Lee, suffered from schizophrenia and paranoia according to the records received from Texas. She appeared to be angry at the Daniel family and had some hate and fear of them, …as well as Northerners, Imperialists, Irish, Catholics, English people, …etc. etc (she was born in the 1950’s). Unfortunately, I never met her. She died before I was born.
The second set of documents appear to be well-researched and typed where I can actually read them. I did some quick online searches and found that some of the information appears to be corroborated by other history buffs. Also, there’s the website: http://www.plantationranch.net/ranch-history.html
All that information appears to corroborate some of Nettie’s writings, so I thought it would be a fine thing to try and bring some light to her thoughts and beliefs as her grandson.
I looked up the Daniel Price II (“Senior”) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_Daniel) and Junior’s history there with Vickie Daniel. It does appear that Daniel Senior was from Houston and had a father (Marion Daniel who was also a lawyer that traded “legal services” for acreage and grain, like Senior).
So, if you are willing to investigate, here is what I have in order of priority:
1.) Did Daniel Price II obtain Aaron Cherry, Senior’s homestead lawfully and morally (i.e., no foreclosure tricks after excessive billing – which appears to be the common scams back then)?
2.) Did Aaron Cherry, Senior play any part in the Fredonia rebellion?
