College Advisor (Half to Full-Time)

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-07-27

About Us

Great Minds Advising (greatmindsadvising.com) is a comprehensive college advising startup providing strategic mentorship to bright, driven, and enthusiastic students aiming for top colleges. During the most recent application cycle, 100% of our students were admitted to a top-choice school. Historically, our students are admitted to the Ivy League at a rate 14x the national average (90% when applying early), reflecting our commitment to excellence.

Above all, we are passionate about helping students discover and pursue their passions while thinking strategically about how they can distinguish themselves and make their admissions stories unique. We are obsessive, meticulous, and relentlessly growth-minded.

    Qualifications
  • degree from an Ivy League, Ivy Plus, or other top college
  • strong desire to mentor high school students
  • exceptional meticulousness, organization, and responsiveness
  • ability to complete tasks quickly and with precision
  • excellent communication and writing skills
  • prior experience working with students in an admissions, tutoring, educational, or other support/mentorship role (preferred)

Training

Advisors start with an intense training phase of 6 weeks, entailing extensive review of documents, guides, and recordings; joining our team Slack (work messaging platform); and one Zoom meeting per week. Time commitment is 15-20 hours per week, mostly asynchronous, with a $450/week stipend.

Positions & Pay

Following the paid training phase, advisors will transition to a half-time salary and incrementally build their roster with students. We consider half-time to be 6-7 students max and full-time to be 12-15 students max.

Half-Time Advisor

Total compensation for a half-time advisor is $35,000 per year, consisting of a $30,000/yr base salary and a $5,000 bonus at year’s end.

Full-Time Advisor

Our ideal candidate would be open to eventually transitioning from half-time into a full-time role, provided it’s an excellent mutual fit. However, we will still strongly consider candidates who might be interested in a half-time only position.

Total compensation for a full-time advisor is $70,000 per year, consisting of a $65,000/yr base salary and a $5,000 bonus at year’s end.

    Benefits
  • Pay raises for exceptional performance
  • 100% remote work with highly flexible schedule and minimal meetings
  • Paid time off (25 days per year)
  • Health insurance for full-time advisors
  • Collaborative, passionate environment with ultra-dependable and high-performing teammates
  • Team social events (remote and in-person)

Time Commitment

Most students begin our program at least a couple years before applying to college. Until December of 11th grade, advisors typically meet students once per month. After that point, the cadence might start to approximate two meetings per month, and for the application process from roughly June—December, students often meet weekly.

On average, the amount of time spent on a student case per year in the pre-application phase is about 100 hours and about 200 hours for students during their application year. Typically no more than a third of an advisor’s students will be applying in a given year.

Role & Responsibilities

Our mission is to provide the best possible advising service to the best students. Given our selective process for admitting students and families to our program, advisors can be sure they’ll be working with highly-motivated, high-achieving students with complete buy-in. The advisor’s role will include the following:
  • helping students identify unique passions, interests, and strengths that will collectively form their admissions “story” and help to differentiate them from other competitive applicants
  • facilitating the resume-building process, which will be centered on each student’s unique admissions story, once identified. Activities are wide-ranging and might include clubs, leadership, summer programs, research, internships, independent projects, self-created organizations, publications, college/online coursework, awards and competitions, or other relevant pursuits
  • strategizing around and helping oversee students’ course selections, academic grades, and standardized testing
  • curating school lists and visit plans that are maximally calibrated to the best and best-fit colleges to which students can reasonably gain admission based on their profiles
  • encouraging and supporting strategic selection of early decision or early action plans at students’ top-choice schools
  • helping students present and supply unique details about their classroom and school impact to teachers and counselors for letters of recommendation
  • optimizing selection of intended majors on a school-by-school basis to give them the greatest chance of admission, based on final candidacy themes/strengths, interests, demographics, and major-specific competitiveness at each college
  • providing beginning-to-end strategy and execution on all application components, which will collectively spotlight students’ unique admissions stories and speak to the very specific ways in which they will benefit from, and contribute to, any given college—both inside and outside the classroom
  • engaging with our team—via Slack messages, briefings, checklists, updates, and any questions or concerns relating to student cases—and in weekly team meetings
